10 Hardy Fish Species Perfect for New Aquarium Owners

The Secret to a Thriving First Tank? Start With the Right Fish.

Not all fish are created equal when it comes to surviving the learning curve of a new aquarium. These 10 species are beloved by beginners for one reason: they're tough. They tolerate beginner mistakes, adapt to a range of water conditions, and still look absolutely stunning in your tank.

1. Betta Fish

The crown jewel of beginner fish. Bettas are colorful, dramatic, and surprisingly low maintenance. Keep them solo — males will fight each other — and they'll thrive in a well-maintained 5-10 gallon tank. They can even breathe air from the surface, making them more resilient than most.

2. Guppies

Guppies are practically indestructible and come in dozens of color varieties. They're livebearers, meaning they give birth to live young — so don't be surprised if your tank population grows! Great for community tanks.

3. Zebra Danios

Fast, active, and incredibly hardy. Zebra danios tolerate a wide range of temperatures and water conditions, making them one of the best "cycling fish" for new tanks. They look great in schools of 6 or more.

4. Platies

Peaceful, colorful, and easy to feed. Platies come in stunning color morphs — sunset, mickey mouse, rainbow — and get along with virtually every other community fish. Another livebearer, so expect babies!

5. Corydoras Catfish

The cleanup crew of your tank. Corydoras are bottom dwellers that scavenge leftover food and are completely peaceful. They prefer groups of 4-6 and get along with everyone. A tank staple.

6. Mollies

Adaptable and social, mollies do well in a wide range of water conditions and even tolerate slightly brackish water. They're active, friendly, and add great movement to a community tank.

7. Swordtails

Named for the distinctive elongated lower tail fin on males. Swordtails are active, hardy, and peaceful with other community fish. They prefer slightly alkaline water and do well in groups.

8. White Cloud Mountain Minnows

One of the few fish that actually prefer cooler water (64-72°F), making them perfect if you don't want to run a heater. They're small, peaceful, and look elegant schooling together in groups of 6+.

9. Cherry Barbs

A splash of deep red color in a peaceful, easy-to-care-for package. Cherry barbs are less nippy than other barb species, making them great community tank candidates. They thrive in planted tanks.

10. Bristlenose Plecos

The algae eaters every tank needs. Bristlenose plecos are smaller than common plecos (maxing out around 5 inches) and spend their days grazing algae off your glass and decorations. Low maintenance and highly useful.

A Note on Fish Health

Even the hardiest fish can fall ill, especially when newly introduced to a tank. Always quarantine new fish for 2 weeks before adding them to your main tank, and keep a treatment like Fish Mox on hand for bacterial infections. Early treatment is the difference between losing a fish and saving one.
